Your tour guide will meet you at the Start of The River Walk Mall, located at 849 E Commerce St, San Antonio, TX 78205, and then we will start our guided portion at the Torch of Friendship - the first point of interest you will witness. Weighing 45 tons and standing 65 ft tall, this impressive work of art was a gift from the Mexican Government in 2002. The sculpture’s intention is to be a symbol of cooperation and shared culture between Mexico and San Antonio. From there, you will make your way along the Riverwalk to your first food stop. Once there, you will enjoy a delicious Tortilla Soup, made of traditional broth with tomato, chile Guajillo, and epazote. This fantastic soup is a perfect way to kick off your food journey.
Next you will head back toward the Riverwalk passing by La Villita, San Antonio’s first neighbourhood. The area was once beautiful farmland south of “mission San Antonio de Valero” (The Alamo), running alongside the San Antonio River. The first settlers were likely squatters, however in 1809, La Villita, Ville de San Fernando, Presidio San Antonio de Bejar and other nearby neighbourhoods came together to form the town of San Antonio. In 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt requested that the area be restored, so the city council began rebuilding, dedicating the project to “the promotion of peace, friendship and justice between the United States of America and all other nations in the Western Hemisphere.” During this time you will also pass by the Historic Village, Venue Villita, Presa Street Bridge, the Mexican Consulate and the Tower Life Building.
You will then make your way to your next food stop, where you will have your choice of a delectable beef, chicken, or pork quesadilla. Your quesadilla will also be paired with a yummy Mexican soda to quench your thirst. Once you’ve finished your mouth watering food and drink, you will continue along the Riverwalk, where you will pass through Marriage Island and Kallison Love Lock Bridge. As their names suggest, both locations, just a five minute walk apart, are very romantic destinations for newlyweds and couples. Marriage Island is a stunning popular venue for couples to get married, while the Love Lock Bridge is a bridge covered in locks placed by couples as a sign of their everlasting love. Typically newlyweds will write their names and wedding date on their lock, give each other a kiss, make a wish, throw the lock’s key into the San Antonio River, and supposedly their wish will come true!
Following these locations you will pass by the San Fernando Cathedral. Founded on March 9th, 1731 by 15 families from the Canary Islands, this astounding Cathedral is the oldest, continuously functioning religious community in Texas. Every weekend, mass brings in over 5000 people from the city, and nearly 1000 baptisms are performed there every year! You will not want to miss seeing this place of worship while you’re in San Antonio.
From here you will continue to your next restaurant stop, where you will get the opportunity to try your choice of authentic contemporary vegan, Baha, or shrimp tacos. Once you’ve finished your tasty tacos, you will head to your last - but not least! - food stop.
There is no better way to finish a food walking tour than with a delicious dessert to satisfy your sweet tooth. You will receivea mexican dessert, which are yummy fried pastries with a Spanish heritage that will be sure to impress.
Once you have finished your dessert, your tour will be completed, your stomach will be satisfied, and your taste buds will be begging for more! Don’t hesitate to book this flavoursome, informative, and fun tour with Tripshepherd today.
