Located at the heart of downtown San Antonio, the Torch of Friendship is a symbol of friendship between the United States and Mexico.
The magnificent sculpture stands tall at 65 feet and weighs 45 tons. It was a gift from a group of Mexican friends to the people of San Antonio and was dedicated to the memory of Henry B. Gonzalez, who served as the congressman for the city for over 37 years.
What to Know
The Torch of Friendship was built in 1960 by sculptor Sebastian in Mexico City. It was a gift from the Mexican government and the friends of Mexico, a group of Mexican businessmen, to the people of San Antonio. The sculpture was installed on June 27, 2001, in the riverwalk area of downtown San Antonio.
The Torch of Friendship is also known as “la Antorcha de la Amistad” and is a beautiful bronze sculpture that depicts a giant hand holding a torch. The base of the sculpture is adorned with images of eagles and Aztec warriors, symbolizing the rich cultural heritage of Mexico.
It is located on Biscayne Boulevard, just a few blocks from the Alamo and the city’s main shopping and entertainment district.
