History
Victoria Row has a rich history that dates back to Charlottetown's early days as a colony. Originally referred to as "Cheapside" or the "south side of Queen Square," this area of Richmond Street attracted commercial activity due to its proximity to the market and the legislative, judicial, and ecclesiastical center of the city. However, tragedy struck in 1884 when a fire, started by a local confectioner, destroyed all but one of the row's wooden-framed buildings.
Luckily, the owners of the buildings decided to rebuild in fireproof brick and hired some of the city's most talented architects and craftsmen to carry out the work. The Morris Block, the Brown Block, and the Stamper Block were all designed by architects Phillips and Chappell, while the Newson Block and the Cameron Block were designed by William Critchlow Harris. Despite fires and changes in use over the years, many of the original features of these buildings remain intact today.
Victoria Row became the pedestrian-friendly street mall that we know and love in 1997 as a result of a collaboration between CADC, the City of Charlottetown, and neighborhood businesses. The boulevard, which is off-limits to cars during the summer, features brick pavers, old trees, charming lighting, a bandstand, a fountain, an archway entrance, and various outdoor dining patios. Victoria Row has become a cherished cultural center and Charlottetown's top tourist destination despite its turbulent background.
