What to Know
The Southernmost Point is a famous landmark located at the corner of South Street and Whitehead Street in Key West, FL. It is known for marking the southernmost point of the continental United States, just 90 miles from Cuba. The Southernmost Point Buoy, which is now an iconic symbol of Key West, was installed in 1983 by the City of Key West to mark the southernmost point of the continental United States. The Southernmost Point Buoy is a painted concrete buoy that symbolizes geographical significance.
Before the concrete buoy, there used to be a wooden sign pointing south at this spot. The old wooden sign changed from its original wording in 1970 to a new phrase by 1982. Since 2011, the buoy has had these words on it: “The Conch Republic, 90 Miles to Cuba, Southernmost Point Continental U.S.A., Key West, F.L., and Home of the Sunset".
The Southernmost Point gained attention during Hurricane Irma. In September 2017, the buoy survived Hurricane Irma. The paint on the painted buoy was damaged by Hurricane Irma but was restored by the original artist later that year.
