Building 22, Charlestown Navy Yard, Charlestown, MA 02129, USA
If you ever get the opportunity to visit Boston one of the most interesting sites to visit is the USS Constitution. Famously called ‘Old Ironsides,’ this ship is the oldest commissioned warship still floating on the surface of the earth. One of the most famous ships in history is the USS Constitution which was commissioned in 1797; the ship has been actively engaged in most of the wars that America has fought in, including the War of 1812 and the Barbary Wars. Today it continues to serve as a commissioned training and ceremonial ship of the US Navy and is a highly interesting attraction for visitors.

What to Know

The USS Constitution is located in the Charlestown Navy Yard which is close to the city of Boston. It is open to the public for visits from Tuesday to Sunday, therefore, make your bookings appropriately. Just a heads up, you will be required to present your photo identification card at the gate, which may include a driver's license or passport and the tours are free of charge.

How to Get There

The following are some of the routes that can be used to get to Charlestown Navy Yard: For the adventurous, take the ferry from Boston Harbor. It is a beautiful route that gives one an opportunity to have an eye view of the city skyline. There is also the T subway system for non-sea lovers or a taxi, of course.

Highlights

A Walk Through History:

Board the USS Constitution and you can almost feel the history of the ship. One can only think of the courageous marines who were navigating the waters of Boston during the War of 1812 and the Barbary War for young America.

Features & Design:

Visit the three majestic masts and the network of complex ropes and cables. Go down to the lower level and see what the living conditions of the sailors were like and see the massive guns that fired during the fight.

USS Constitution Museum:

Combine your ship tour with a visit to the USS Constitution Museum which is located on the same site. There are various facilities to learn about the ship’s history from its construction in 1797 up to its current use as a training ship for the US Navy.

Beyond the Ship

The main attraction is the USS Constitution; however, other places of interest can be seen at Charlestown Navy Yard. Visit the old shipyard, get to know about ship construction, and maybe see the Navy personnel at work.

Best Time to Visit

Autumn, from September to November, and spring, from March to May, are the best times to come to the island because the weather is not extreme. The number of visitors is relatively low compared to the summer months which allows being alone with the ship.
