Thunder Hole

A must-see destination of Bar Harbor, Thunder Hole has some awe-inspiring coastal views that are worth exploring. Be it high tides or low tides, you wouldn’t want to miss this place. It is also famous for its rustic design and is on the National Register of Historic Places. 

 

On the rocky shoreline of Mount Desert Island, Thunder Hole is a carved-out inlet. When high tides or storms force waves in this small cave, the air escapes and makes a thunderous sound. The unique thunderclap of this underwater cave is something out of this world. 

 

Be very careful of your surroundings when visiting Thunder Hole because the waves can be very dangerous even when the weather is nice and calm. Also, look for the rogue waves as they are often unpredictable and come crashing down. Drive around the famous Park Loop Road or walk along the Ocean Road to get there. 

 

 

What to Know

A Maine Landmark, Thunder Hole is more than about thunder. The tour of Acadia National Park means you must visit this place, too. With stunning views all around it, especially the rocks carved out on both sides of the inlet. 

 

If you want to experience the mighty thunders, then it’s best to go during high tides or two hours before high tides. You’ll also experience the beauty of extreme crashing waves. The waves can reach up to 40 feet, so be prepared to get wet. Also, if there are no high tides, the place is wonderful, simply on its own, with gorgeous views. You can also enjoy the terrific views of Sand Beach and Otter Cliff from this place as well. 

 

You will also find a small parking lot in the area. There is also wheelchair-accessible parking that is reserved for those in need. You can spot that by the wheelchair-accessible sign. Also, you can find two restrooms there that are unisex and wheelchair friendly. It’s best to visit this place off-season because there will be fewer crowds. 

 

On the left side of the parking lot, walk for a little bit and you’ll find the entrance to a ramp down that leads to the upper viewing deck for Thunder Hole. On the left of the ramp, you will find two additional staircases that lead to the viewing deck. From this deck, you will find beautiful views of the rocky coastline and the complex rock formation of Thunder Hole. For a more detailed view of the “hole,” you can walk down the 55-step-long stairway leading to a lower viewing area. 

 

If you want to take pictures, then it’s best to take them before noon. Because Thunder Hole faces East, and the sun will be shining at the chute. After noon, the sun is behind the parking lot, and the pictures will not be very lively and colorful. You can take in the beauty of the area and its fresh air. Also, bring food with you and enjoy your little picnic for an unforgettable experience. Lastly, there is also a cute little Thunder Hole gift shop in the area to bring souvenirs with you. It also offers refreshing snacks and coffee. 

 

How to Get There

You can get there by driving around the Park Loop Road and you will find the Thunder Hole on the right side of the road. There are four angled parking spaces available for you. You can also get to the Thunder Hole by walking along the Ocean Path. 

 

Another great and best way to get there is to take advantage of the fare-free Island Explorer Shuttle Bus. With the option of pick-up and drop-off, you’ll be left with nothing to worry about. The bus stops at the bus stop sign near the entrance to the parking lot and usually travels at regular intervals. After you’re finished with your tour, wait on the left side of the road for the bus to arrive. 

 

Best Time to Visit 

Any time is a great time to visit Thunder Hole. But if you’re actually looking to experience the mighty thunder, then it’s better to arrive 1-2 hours before the high tide. And the best season to visit this place is winter because this is the time when the ocean is at its most powerful.
